A Brief Guide to the Different Types of Guitars

With the guitar becoming more popular, and inventions in new technology, there are many different varieties of guitars on the market. Each has its own distinctive qualities and sound, and works perfectly for certain kinds of music.

In general, there are four basic types of guitars. They are acoustic guitars, electric guitars, 12 string guitars and bass guitars.

The acoustic guitar is by far the oldest. In fact, this instrument can be traced back to over 5000 years ago. Typically, the strings are made of nylon or steel, and the body is made of wood. It is ideal for classical and soft music, as well as folk music. It has a very intimate sound.

An electric guitar is probably the most common types of guitar used today in popular music. Especially when it comes to rock ‘n roll, the electric guitar stands out. However, in electric guitar doesn’t necessarily mean heavy music. It just means the ability to amplify the guitar tone. Thus, you can get a very clean guitar sound from an electric guitar. Also, electric guitars allow you to manipulate and put effects on the tones to create very distinct sounds.

The 12 string guitar is a very specific type of acoustic guitar. However, it offers its own unique sound. This is because with an additional six strings, you have another octave at your disposal, when playing chords and strumming along.

Bass guitars are used for the lower tones and notes in music. Typically, a bass guitar only has four strings, and is used for rhythm more so than melody, given the fact it produces a very low tone. There are both acoustic and electric versions of the bass guitar.

There you have it — 4 types of guitars that are the most common in music.
